St. Mary's on Edge: Abandoned Fish Sauce Plant at Risk of Collapse (2026)

Potential Evacuations in St. Mary's as Abandoned Fish Sauce Plant Crumbles

An abandoned fish sauce plant in the quaint town of St. Mary's has suffered severe damage from strong winds, prompting the mayor to issue a dire warning: the community is on the brink of a disaster.

The high winds that lashed the area last night caused the side of the building to collapse entirely, posing an immediate threat to nearby residents. The structure is now deemed unsafe, and authorities are considering evacuation measures.

The winds are expected to intensify, reaching speeds of 70 km/h on Sunday and potentially reaching near 100 km/h on Monday. This forecast has residents on edge, especially those living in close proximity to the damaged plant.

Mayor Steve Ryan expressed grave concerns, highlighting the plant's contents: vats of rotting fish sauce. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that if the wind shifts in the wrong direction, the contents could spill into the ocean, leading to a catastrophic event.

"If this wind takes a turn for the worse, it could head straight into the ocean, and we're looking at a serious crisis," Mayor Ryan told VOCM News on Saturday. "I believe the federal government should intervene and provide assistance. This shouldn't solely be the province's responsibility. The federal government has a significant role to play in this matter."

The mayor further elaborated on the ongoing challenges, including funding, licensing, and the process of shutting down the plant. He mentioned a tender that was supposed to be issued later this month for the cleanup, hoping it would expedite the process.

Ryan also addressed the residents' concerns, stating that many are eager for a quicker resolution. He assured them that their safety is paramount, and evacuation may become necessary if the wind changes direction, causing the structure to lift off its foundation.

"I've been speaking with the residents near the building, and they share our concern. We want to ensure their safety above all else. If the wind takes a different path and the structure becomes airborne, as I anticipate, we will have to consider evacuating those residents promptly," he said.
