A powerful windstorm has left its mark on the beloved Bruce II Sports Centre in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, but the town's spirit remains unshaken.
A Community Hub in Ruins
The recent windstorm, with gusts reaching an astonishing 125 km/h, has caused significant damage to the Bruce II's roof, a stark reminder of the town's resilience in the face of adversity. Mayor Mark Andrews, who was stranded in North Sydney due to the storm, expressed his confidence in the town's ability to recover, emphasizing the arena's central role in the community.
"It's more than just a building; it's a pillar of our community. People gather here for sports, exercise, and social events. It's a massive loss for our residents," Andrews said.
A New Roof, a Fresh Start
The timing of the storm is particularly unfortunate, as a new roof membrane was installed just last year, costing the town a substantial $1 million. Chad Skinner, a coach at the centre, expressed his relief that no one was injured but acknowledged the emotional impact and uncertainty surrounding the incident's aftermath.
"It's a community centre, a hub for the entire southwest coast. The impact will be felt far and wide," Skinner added.
A History of Resilience
Port aux Basques is no stranger to the forces of nature. The town has weathered heavy damage from Hurricane Fiona in 2022, which resulted in the destruction of dozens of homes, over $7 million in damages, and tragically claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman. Mayor Andrews noted that Monday's windstorm brought back painful memories of Fiona, wounds that are still fresh in the town's collective memory.
"We are a resilient town, a strong community. We've faced challenges before, and we will overcome this together," Andrews affirmed.

With the arena closed for assessments and the insurance company on-site, the town is facing a lengthy period of uncertainty. Some residents are questioning the preparedness of the town's infrastructure, especially given the recent history of natural disasters.
